OUR STORY

OUR STORY

Women in Media was founded in 2016 by a group of students at the University of Manchester, each hoping to break into the media industry. Even in student level, we noticed that the roles of writers, radio presenters, and interviewees were dominated by men – and we were acutely aware that it only got worse the further up you got. We decided something needed to change.

So in 2016 we held our first Women in Media conference in Manchester, and the conference has been successfully running every year since. Our aim is to empower women starting their media careers – helping them build the skillset they need to succeed by connecting them with a network of inspiring women, including those who are already established in the industry.

Students are at the forefront of everything we do. We have WIM societies at universities across the UK, and an annual Women in Media Conference run by a team of students at the University of Manchester. We want to give every student in the country the opportunity to start their own Women in Media society - and every aspiring woman in media the chance to make this a reality.
